Major Activities and Achievement of AATWIN


  • Launched letter-writing campaign in 1999, in which letters to the Heads of the States and the Governments of SAARC countries were sent to draw attention against human trafficking for SAARC Convention.
  • Hosted the Second SAARC People’s Forum in 2000 and its follow-up meeting prior to the 11th SAARC Summit in 2002 to create pressure on the SAARC countries for the promulgation of a regional-level convention against human trafficking organized, continuous lobbying and campaigns during various SAARC Summits to influence for  formation of a SAARC-level mechanism to prevent and fight against  trafficking of women and children.
  •  Conducted awareness campaigns to clarify concepts on issues of human trafficking from local to international levels through different workshops, seminars, interactions, publications for concept clarity and changing dynamics of human trafficking.
  • Organized various national workshops to initiate dialogue for ratification of SAARC Convention against trafficking from human rights perspectives.
  •  Played pro-active role in the first SAARC People’s Forum as the local organizer, which provided recognitions in national and international forums.
  •  AATWIN was introduced in the Social Studies textbook of 10th Grade since last 2 decades.
  • Established AATWIN Information and Resource Center in 2004.
  • Carried out researches, and published reports, entitled
    • ‘Insearch of Identity’ (2006) highlighting “Nepali Women and Citizenship Issue: The Social- Political Impacts on the Lives of Nepali Women”;
    •  ‘Where Accountability Lies?’ (2013) to develop participatory method of monitoring anti- trafficking initiatives’.
    • 'How protected Are They?' to assess and provide recommendations on mechanisms for protection of survivors of human trafficking and vulnerable persons.
    • "Modern slavery in Nepal : Understanding the problems and Existing Responses" (2014)
    • Pilot survey for mapping Vulnerability to Human Trafficking in Sindhupalchowk and Makwanpur (2019)
  • Organized campaigns to advocate on the right to citizenship through mother:
  • Organized 'Women in Black' events, the silent protest programs against trafficking of women and children in commemoration of Beijing Conference, on last Friday of each month from August 1997-2008.
  • Organized district, regional and national programs and capacity building initiatives against human trafficking.
  • Hosted 'Women's Court' on human trafficking to launch 'We Can', a South Asia Campaign to end all violence against women from December 2004-2011.
  • Succeeded in advocating for  promulgating Human Trafficking and Transportation (Control) Act, 2007 and National Plan of Action against Trafficking in persons, Especially Women and Children, 2012, which was a key agenda of AATWIN.
  • Carried out intensive lobby and advocacy campaign for promulgation of the Domestic Violence (Crime and punishment ) Act, 2009
  • Organized the national level 'Honor Ceremony' in 2011 to honor Charimaya Tamang, trafficked survivor and Shakti Samuha in acknowledgement of their courageous efforts against human trafficking and first person to be  internationally honored.
  • Honoured by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare (MoWSCW) in 2010 and 2012 for its remarkable contribution against human trafficking.
  • Nominated constantly for third term (2009, 2013 and 2018) as a member of National Coordinating Committee for Controlling Human Trafficking (NCCHT) /Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare.
  • AATWIN members, survivors and personalities affiliated to and recommended by AATWIN has been honored on the occasion on National Day against Human Trafficking by Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens.
  • Successfully advocated on the right to compensation against human trafficking and slavery ensured under the right against exploitation/human trafficking in the Constitution of Nepal, 2015
  • Nominated as a member of technical committee for the implementation of National Action Plan 2012 against Trafficking in Women and Children, of Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare
  • Contributed to the SDG 2030 goals as well as involved in its implementation through Nepal SDGs Forum.
  • Established a space for continuous cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens (MoWCSC), National Human Rights Commission's (NHRC) Office of the Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Women and Children (OSRT), National Women Commission (NWC) and related agencies including stakeholders.
